The community is mourning the passing of Michael “Mike” Shaw, born July 14, 1951, who died on June 12, 2026. His life was marked by service, creativity, and devotion to family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, humor, and craftsmanship.
Military Service
Mike proudly served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Kittyhawk CV-63 as an Aviation Structural Mechanic. His bravery was recognized with a letter of commendation for heroic efforts during the flooding crisis in Washington State in December 1975. His time in service shaped his character and instilled a strong work ethic.
Career and Passions
After his naval service, Mike settled in Bellingham, Washington, where he discovered a lifelong love for woodworking. He crafted clocks and furniture from Burl wood, later opening Shaw’s Furniture and Refinishing in Louisville, showcasing his artistry and respect for antiques.
Mike was also a passionate collector, deeply involved in the Crowncap Collectors Society International. In 2004, he published a book about his extensive beer can and bottle cap collection. He enjoyed attending the Street Rod Nationals and proudly showed his 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass at car shows. A devoted fan of the UofL Cardinals, he rarely missed a game.
Personal Life
A graduate of Iroquois High School (1970), Mike was remembered for his humor, wit, meticulous work, and gentle nature. He was a beloved uncle, friend, and mentor, admired for his loyalty and kindness.
Family
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Freda Shaw; siblings Shirley Miller, Geri Hassman, and Wayne Shaw Sr.; and nephews Todd Hassman and Wayne Shaw Jr.
He is survived by his sister Judith Ryan, sister-in-law Ethel Shaw, and many nieces, nephews, and friends who will cherish his memory.
Funeral Arrangements
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Louisville (10304 Dixie Highway, Louisville, KY 40272) from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., with the funeral service beginning at 6:00 p.m. Family, friends, and all touched by Mike’s life are welcome to attend.
