Posted by The Findlay community is mourning the loss of David W. Smith, who passed away on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 12:45 a.m. at Bridge Hospice Care Center. He was 62 years old.
Born on December 11, 1963, David was remembered as a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend whose life was marked by dedication, generosity, and unwavering love for his family.
David passed away while in hospice care, with his loving brother, Tim, by his side. He had been suffering complications from early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, a condition he faced with strength and resilience.
He is survived by his wife, Gretchen; his children, Todd, Danny, Austin, and Cecelia; his stepdaughter, Aster; his brother, Tim; and his sisters, Kim and Melinda.
David dedicated nearly 40 years of his life to FedEx Express, where his exceptional punctuality and commitment to excellence became hallmarks of his career. He was deeply passionate about the mission of FedEx Express and worked in various roles across the country, including coordinating teams, equipment, and jets for air shows. His career culminated in his position as Manager, On-Road Planning for the Sunshine District in Orlando, Florida, before retiring in 2023.
Beyond his professional achievements, David was known for his steadfast devotion to his family. He worked tirelessly to provide a warm, safe, and loving home, ensuring that those he cared about never went without. Neighbors and friends remember him as a kind and dependable man, always ready with a friendly wave, conversation, or a freshly made latte from the comfort of his porch swing.
Music held a special place in David’s heart. A talented piano hobbyist and guitarist, he possessed a remarkable ear for music and could play songs after hearing them only once. Even as Alzheimer’s progressed, David found joy in sharing his musical gift with family and friends.
David also took great pride in maintaining his cherished 2006 Shelby Convertible, which he considered one of his prized possessions. For him, any day with temperatures above 55 degrees and little rain was perfect for driving with the top down.
Above all, David was immensely proud of his children and their individuality. He encouraged them to pursue their studies, remain true to themselves, and follow their own paths in life. His love and pride were evident in every accomplishment and adventure they shared together.
David’s legacy lives on through the security, love, and guidance he provided to those closest to him. He will be remembered for his quick wit, protective nature, unwavering convictions, and the deep care he showed for his family and home.
David W. Smith will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will continue to inspire and comfort those whose lives he touched.
